“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.” (Malachi 3:10)
I can remember one of first days that I made money of my very own. I helped out at our family's business during the summer and, holding $25 in my hand, I was thinking of what all I, as a 12 year old, could buy with this fortune.
I sat down on our couch when my father looked at me and said, "Don't forget to give God's His amount of money first." Was he talking to me? I worked and earned that money, why should I give any of it up? Even if it was just $2.50.
That conversation with my dad has continued to affect my life, because it was in that moment that I learned it's not about money, it's about a heart of worship. I give my tithes and offerings to God since He has blessed me and given me more than I could ever imagine.
I work a few days a week at the Coop (aka Chick Fil A) as well go to school full time. As you can imagine, pulling out money from those pay checks can sting knowing how many Starbucks coffees and special treats I am giving up. However, that feeling is so temporary, because
I know that God is teaching me during this time to trust Him in my obedience now when I don't have much to sacrifice, so one day when I feel there's nothing left, I will continue to worship Him in this way.
I see such joy and blessing when I give. (I'm not saying God is going to give you a brand new car or anything like that, BUT I do know that the Lord rewards faithfulness).
There's just this joy that comes when you're walking with the Lord and allowing Him into every part of your life.
As a 19 year old I can't say I've experienced a whole lot, but I can tell you that tithing is one of the most intimate, personal forms of worship. Knowing that our treasures are to be laid up in Heaven and making investments for the Kingdom just warms my heart. This 12 year old girl gave her $2.50 and learned that it's all about Him.
Let’s think of ways you can worship Jesus with your budget this month.
