Psalm 91:4: He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
Hear my cry, O God,
listen to my prayer;
from the end of the earth I call to you
when my heart is faint.
Lead me to the rock
that is higher than I,
for you have been my refuge,
a strong tower against the enemy.
My daughter Rebecca and I love a good day planner. You know, the kind that has lots of lines to fill up and a place to write all of those important dates to remember. Birthdays, anniversaries, milestones, celebrations … all of those days we have to make sure we commemorate or at least stop and remember. These days always seem to require some sort of reflection about life. September is definitely a month of reflection for me. Especially September 18, 2014.... the day I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I have a very strong connection to that date.
I know you can probably think of a date that somehow changed your life forever.
In reflecting on September 18, 2014, after almost a year I have both positive and negative memories. It seems from that date on we were always on a countdown throughout the whole process of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Every day had a significance that evolved around starting or finishing a treatment. But as I was counting down the days to reach those milestones, the one thing I always knew for sure God was with me through everything. It reminds me of the words to the song "Through it All", especially verse three...
"I thank God for the mountains
And I thank Him for the valleys
I thank Him for the storms He brought me through
For if I'd never had a problem,
I wouldn't know God could solve them,
I'd never know what faith in God could do.
Through it all,
through it all,
I've learned to trust in Jesus,
I've learned to trust in God.
Through it all,
through it all,
I've learned to depend upon His Word. "
I can remember throughout this past year, I had many people who would often say, "How are you handling this? I don't know if I could go through all of that!"
Guess what? When you know the Lord, you don't have to go through anything alone. Although I had so much support through it all, I still felt lonely at times. That's when God was always there to offer His amazing grace, strength, comfort and guidance.
Do you ever feel like no one really understands what you are going through? Think about the fact that only God knows before you do what will happen in your life; every detail - even down to the small stuff.
When we trust God to guide us through the small stuff, it makes us realize even more that He can ALWAYS handle the big stuff.
John 14:17-18: even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
Ephesians 3: 17-19: so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
I hope there will be many more dates to remember throughout my life and yours that we can pen them in a planner. Some days will be great and some days may not be so good, but if God dwells within your heart you can always make your day count knowing He is there to carry you through it all!
