Right now, I can probably think of quite a few things that I am grateful for. Sure, life isn’t always easy but for the most part it’s pretty great! However, I can think back to times when life wasn’t so peachy. Like freshman year….. Ah poor little freshman me. In my first semester of college, I had a broken foot and was known as the “girl with the boot”. I also totaled my car and landed in the front yard of a frat house, I left my wallet on a bus that drove off and my computer consistently kept crashing and deleting my papers. Yeah friends, I was the queen of the struggle bus! Or should I say… the handicap struggle bus.
I remember constantly calling my mom and whining about some new disaster story. Then, my mom shared something very insightful about the year before when she was battling breast cancer and going through a rough time herself. She told me that during her difficult time in life, she wrote a list every morning of things that she was thankful for and she encouraged me to do the same (Moms are so wise!) So… that’s what I began to do.
As I started to acknowledge my blessings, my outlook on life began to change. It made me realize that no matter what adversities I am facing, His blessings far outweigh my struggles.
Paul reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 to “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” That says in ALL circumstances, not just the good times when it is easy and convenient. It is amazing to me how Paul was able to praise God throughout his rough times of being persecuted and imprisoned. David also suffered much in his life, yet he also remembered to praise God in all situations.
Psalm 103:1-5 says:
1Praise the Lord, my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
2Praise the Lord, my soul,
and forget not all his benefits--
3who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases,
4who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
5who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
This morning, I went back to my notebook and found a few of the lists and prayers of things that I was thankful for. It is amazing to see how God has worked with those blessings in my life throughout the years. It is also cool to think back on harder times and see what God has shown me and how I have grown closer to Him. God never said that life would be easy, but he did say he would always be with us, and for that I am most grateful.
