Purpose by Christine Hitch
As Rebecca challenged me to think of a word for the coming year, I started thinking about what 2017 was going to look like. Then it hit me that I would be going through a big season of change! In May, I will graduate from grad school and soon begin my career as a speech pathologist. I have no idea where I will be working, where I will be moving or what life will look like. I feel God calling me to move, but I still have no idea where. Change is always really hard on me, and although I am very excited about this new season of life, the uncertainty of what is to come weighs very heavy on my heart.
When thinking through this, the word that kept sticking in my head was purpose. I know that in the coming year I am going to have to rely heavily on God and know that He has a purpose for me, even if I don’t know exactly what that will be. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Proverbs 19:21 reminds us that, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails”.
I often try to choose my own purpose or plan on my own, but I need to remember that His plan is far greater than I can ever imagine.
No matter where I end up this next year or what I will be doing, I also want to live this next year with purpose! I want to wake up every day and remember that no matter what my circumstances are, my ultimate purpose in life is glorify Him.
Romans 8: 28-30 says:
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose. For whom he foreknew, he also predestined to become conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the first-born among many brethren; and whom he predestined, these he also called; and whom he called, these he also justified; and whom he justified, these he also glorified.
God has a great plan for each one of us, and no matter where He calls us to go or what He plans for us to do, our ultimate purpose is all the same - to serve Him and share His word.
As the end of the year comes to a close, I challenge you to think of a word that God has been placing on your heart and see how it shapes 2017.
