Under the sea....that's where you will find the little mermaid hat. This little hat is super easy to do and will make a little girl's day brighter.

Round 5: (popcorn stitch) Ch 3, work 5 dc in the same stitch. Drop the loop from your hook. Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first dc of the group.
Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch. One popcorn stitch completed. Skip the next stitch and make a popcorn stitch in the next stitch. Continue around, join with sl st to the ch 3 at the beginning. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Center: Ch 3, join in a ring with a sl st. Sc 6 in the ring, sl st to join.
Step 1: Ch 6, sl st in the 2nd st from the hook, sc in the next 2 sts,1 dc in the next 2 sts, sl st in the 2nd st of the center. The first ray is complete. Repeat four more times. The starfish has 5 rays. Fasten off and weave in ends. Sew onto the side of the hat.
Braid: Cut 15 pieces of yarn 20" long. Gather up the lengths and fold them in half. Using a large crochet hook, insert the hook through where the braid will attach and draw the fold through. Pull the lengths through the loop and pull the yarn to even the sides up. Separate the lengths into 3 groups and braid. To secure the braid cut a piece of yarn and tie around the end of the braid, knotting several times. Trim ends if desired.
I wanted to share a quick update after some questions we’ve received about the Oklahoma State Department of Health’s project to collect hats for babies with Shaken Baby Syndrome. They are collecting purple hats to donate to local hospitals in Oklahoma to be given to families.
Hats must be newborn to infant sized and must be at least 50% purple in color – made out of yarn that is soft and would be fitting for a baby hat. Below is an article about the project.
818 Ministries will be collecting purple hats for the project through Friday, September 25th. Our shipment will go to them on Monday, September 28th. If you would like to participate and ship your hats to us so we can package them with letters of encouragement before sending them out, please ship them to
