Psalm 139:2, Genesis 1:2, Galatians 4:6, Psalm 23:6
The word relentless brings me back to my senior year of college where I came to understand the Lord’s relentless pursuit of me. I remember being so humbled, amazed, and thankful at the truth that the Lord constantly pursues me, even when I’m running away from Him or simply not pursuing Him.
Have you ever had a relationship, whether that's a friendship, a sibling, a parent, or a boyfriend/girlfriend and you felt like you did all the pursuing? You are always there to listen when they need to talk. You are the one to always take the initiative to plan a date. Do you feel like this person only wants you when it’s convenient for them?
I’m sure we have all experienced this on certain levels and how frustrating it can be! I think this paints a cool picture of our relationship with Jesus.
How often are we that person we get frustrated with?
He is the one who pursues us in a way we will never fully understand. He has been pursuing me with His radical love my entire life - every step of the way. He not only chases after me, but He never takes His eyes off me. He is always there to listen and He hears every single word - He even knows them before I speak them!
He knows my thoughts from afar. [Psalm 139:2] His presence is everywhere - all the time. He doesn’t have to plan time for me. He is accessible every second of every day. Genesis 1:2 says, ”Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.” God’s presence has been and will be forever. He has “sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts.” All we have to do is cry “Abba, Father!” [Galatians 4:6] When I recognized the depth of the Lord’s relentless pursuit for me, it completely transformed my relationship with Him.
I think we first have to understand God’s relentless pursuit of us before we can be relentless ourselves. God empowers us to relentlessly pursue our calling and our relationships by His living in us. There will be trials in this life and we will get tired. We will feel distant from the Lord but it’s in those times the Lord is pursing us relentlessly.
My prayer is that we would actively and relentlessly pursue Him like He is pursing us.
“Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life.”
